Opis: Occupy ~ Spiritual Warriors, Peaceful Warriors A Commentary by E.W. Swan I see them in the streets as they stand, sit, or march the avenues of Boston, Atlanta, and Washington D.C., in the well defined boulevards of Oakland, Phoenix and New York City. I watch as they stand a few at a time or building into a movement of a hundred thousand strong, organizing not on one issue or being pigeon-holed into another, yet all standing strong as they chant along with a drum not beating for war. Standing strong so to be heard and no longer ignored, these are the voices of the young, the old, and the middle aged citizen speaking their mind on any and all the issues enveloping our times. Issues that have been too frequently or too conveniently set aside, be it the entire array of social values evolving from decades of social action or the slow plodding of political reform. Be it the ever increasing cost of receiving the necessary education so to obtain a viable livelihood unrestrained by the student loans that such instruction presents for years, or even decades to come. I listen to them as they regale their thoughts and opinions about the myopic vision of the banker's interests or the blatant lack thereof. Or yet another issue, very confounding, that of the comfortable culture of corporate welfare dressed in guise of governmental subsidies and legally defined tax loopholes. Citizens of our everyday labor force are finally standing and decrying the vaunted income of the CEO's of those very institutions, procuring an average of 250 times the wage of the daily worker and that's long before they don their golden parachutes. These peaceful warriors, these spiritual warriors occupying the streets of our cities marching for social justice demanding that their thoughts are heard on the politically divisive issues of social and economic inequality. They stand in the streets, not being swayed by either rubber bullets or tear gas, much less the latest public reaction poll, or any other politically motivated PR box-scores. I feel them as they sit quietly, alone, thinking of their loved ones, sipping on a hot cup of coffee at their kitchen tables or within the tranquil surroundings of their own living room. I sense their presence growing, as it is becoming so evident there is to be yet another confrontation of will, a deep questioning on which course to take on preparing for any possible peace on earth. These spiritual warriors, these veterans of the non-violent action congregate on the peaceful battlefield of protest and consternation in their kitchens, and in the streets, in the hallways heading to the campus student unions, and in the crowded lobbies of the people's everyday workplace, objecting to any and all acts blatantly displayed in the guise of yet another just war, be it a political, social or economic confrontation. They don't all wear collars or cloaks, miters or robes, and they needn't pontificate in the gothic halls of the synagogue, cathedral or mosque. And never do they request or beseech to receive the accolades of purple hearts or silver stars, yet their courage, their courage is as hallowed. Instead these veterans of the peaceful action, practitioners of freedom of assembly and that of speech are painted with oversized brushstrokes in the newspapers and magazines, quick thirty second splashes on the TV screen depicting them in the malicious colors of deviant and defiant, cowardly and unpatriotic. I see these same spiritual warriors in the streets of London, Athens and Paris, in Moscow, Rome and Damascus, hundreds and thousands strong, waving banners and singing songs. Spiritual warriors, peaceful warriors standing strong in the streets be it a few at a time or congregating soundly in throngs voicing their opposition to not being heard. Spiritual warriors, peaceful warriors, I hear them in the cafes and diners across the broad spans of the European and North American continent, I sense them in the pubs and the eateries of Britain, Scotland, and the other nations interconnected within the Commonwealth Communities. Spiritual warriors, peaceful warriors, thousands upon millions strong spiritual warriors, peaceful warriors, your voices shall be heard; the vision of your future is not gone. Spiritual warriors, peaceful warriors...stand strong, stand strong.
